Stain removal tips

Art stains
(plasticine, felt tip pens, pens)

Plasticine:

Remove the excess, machine wash. If the stain persists, place a paper towel over it and iron on a hot setting all over. Machine wash immediately.

Felt-tip pen, ballpoint pen:

Another remedy: dab with lemon juice and salt or rubbing alcohol diluted in water (one measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water), rinse and machine wash immediately

Sports stains
(grass, soil, mud)

Grass:

Machine wash - if the stain persists, dab with a mixture of hot water and rubbing alcohol (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water), rub gently, rinse and machine wash immediately.

Soil, mud:

Leave to dry then gently brush the stain and machine wash.

DIY stains
(rust, glue)

Rust:

Dab with lemon juice and salt, rinse and machine wash immediately.

Glue:

Freeze the stain with an ice cube then scrape to remove the glue.

Another remedy:

Cover with a paper towel, iron on a hot setting all over then scrape to remove the glue.

Daredevil stains
(blood, eosin antiseptic lotion)

Blood:

On a fresh stain, soak and rub in heavily salted cold water or in water with one or two aspirins, then rinse and machine wash. On a dry stain, dab with water and vinegar, rinse and machine wash immediately.

Eosin antiseptic lotion:

If the stain is fresh, blot dry with a paper towel then dab with rubbing alcohol diluted in cold water (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water), rinse and machine wash.

Fruit stains
(cherries, jam, red fruit, tomatoes)

Cherries:

Dab the stain with a cloth dipped in milk then machine wash immediately. If the stain persists, dab with rubbing alcohol diluted in water (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water). Rinse and machine wash immediately.

Red fruit jam:

Remove the excess jam. Machine wash immediately. If the stain persists, follow the same instructions as for cherries.

Tomatoes:

If the stain is fresh, dab with a cloth dipped in milk, rinse then machine wash immediately. If the stain is older, dab with diluted rubbing alcohol (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water). Rinse and machine wash immediately.

Ketchup:

Rinse with cold water, soak the stain with water and vinegar and leave. If this does not work, soak for two hours in white vinegar or hot milk then rinse and machine wash immediately.

Vegetable stains
(carrots, spinach, beetroot)

Carrots:

Machine wash. If the stain persists, dab with rubbing alcohol diluted in water (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water) then rinse and machine wash immediately.

Spinach:

Rub with a raw potato then machine wash immediately. If the stain persists, follow the same instructions as for carrots.

Beetroot:

Dab with soft bread then machine wash immediately. If the stain persists, follow the same instructions as for carrots.

Drink stains
(coke, fizzy drinks, milk)

Coke, fizzy drinks:

Sprinkle the stain with flour or cornflour diluted in water, brush lightly then rinse and machine wash. If the stain persists, dab with rubbing alcohol diluted in water (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water), rinse and machine wash immediately.

Milk:

Machine wash immediately. If the stain is dry, rinse with hot water then rub gently and machine wash.

Grease stains
(oil, butter, spread)

Oil, butter:

Remove the excess by dabbing with a paper towel. Sprinkle with talc, iron on a hot setting placing a paper towel between the sole plate of the iron and the fabric. Machine wash immediately.

Spread:

Remove the excess, machine wash. If the stain persists, dab with a cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol diluted in water (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water), then rinse and machine wash immediately.

Stubborn stains
(egg, chewing gum)

Egg:

Rinse immediately with cold water scraping lightly then wash in cold soapy water. Another remedy: dab with diluted rubbing alcohol (1 measure of alcohol, 2 measures of water), then rinse and machine wash immediately.

Chewing gum:

Freeze the chewing gum with an ice cube then scrape to remove it. Another remedy: place a paper towel on it and iron on a hot setting. Repeat if necessary.

Natural stains
(urine, vomit, mould)

Urine:

Rinse immediately, rub with water and vinegar then rinse and machine wash immediately.

Vomit:

Remove the excess. Machine wash immediately. If the stain persists, dab with water and vinegar, rinse then machine wash.

Mould:

Dab the stain with a cloth dipped in lemon juice and salt. Rinse then machine wash.
